The Mushbowl, Murtle River

Mushbowl Falls on the Murtle River.

This is Mushbowl Falls, also known simply as The Mushbowl. This is the Murtle River which flows out of Murtle Lake near the southeastern corner of Wells Gray Park, into the Clearwater River three or four miles downstream of here. The confluence of the Murtle River and the Clearwater River is about 20 miles below Clearwater Lake. About two and a half miles below the Mushbowl is Helmcken Falls, about a 450 foot sheer drop (canoe and kayaks not allowed). I tried for a picture of Helmcken Falls, but the sun was at a crummy angle, and the picture is terrible.

The rock in this area is all basalt from volcanoes in the Murtle Lake area to the east. And notice the light rainbow in the picture. Fallsbow? (no rain).

By the way, kayakers run this falls. It's probably about 10 feet high or maybe a bit more. I'm standing on a bridge over the Murtle River as I take the picture. That straight line across the lower left corner of the image is part of the bridge railing.
