Cariboo Beach View 2![]() This shot is taken from the beach at Cariboo Campground on the west shore near the south end of Clearwater Lake. We're just stopping to see what the campground looks like (Laurie and I haven't visited it before) and for a short rest break before taking out, about a mile farther down the lake. John is pulling out some snack stuff while Alison gets a drink of water. The view is north, up the length of Clearwater Lake, and some of the higher mountains in the Park are visible in the sky line. The highest peak, the pointy one with the obvious snow on it is Garnet Mountain, the highest in Wells Gray Park at 9514 feet (2900 meters). The slightly lower one to the left of it is Huntley Mountain, 7976 feet. There's a hiking trail to Huntley col (pass beside the peak, 6725 feet) from Azure Lake if you don't mind steep hiking. Lots of people do it, and a few probably stump their way to the top after they get there. An assault on Garnet would be a major expedition entailing glacier travel. The mountain that looks to be to the right of Garnet is actually 'distant foreground.' It's the south shore of Azure and east shore of Clearwater, just the slopes of Zodiak and Azure Mountains, not the highest portions of them. It looks higher because they're closer.
