Wilderness Canoe Tripping
Clearwater Lake View 1![]() After getting into Clearwater Lake we slowly paddled south down the west shore looking at campgrounds. The one we wanted to stay in was full, so we paddled the mile and a half across the lake, then south less than a half mile towards Huckleberry Campground. This beach is about a quarter mile north of the official campground. From it, we could see what looked like hoards of people. We took a break on this beach to go over our options, one of which was to stay and camp here. That's frowned on by the Park personnel, but in times of crowding it has to happen and they overlook it. We decided to paddle down to look, and there was one site still open which we took. You're looking north from that beach. The high mountain on the right in the background is Mt. Huntley at 2429 meters (7969 feet). The small mountain to the left of it is unnamed, but located west of the south end of Hobson Lake, another long skinny lake oriented sort of north and south, inline with and sitting north of Clearwater Lake. That small mountain is about 1600 meters high (5249 feet). Another small moutain can be seen behind it (north), also unnamed, and about 1800 meters (5905 feet). The slopes to the extreme left that get cut off at the edge of the photo are probably those of Mt. Hutch (2517 m., 8258 ft.), or Mt. Perseus (about the same height, but figure not given). Sitting here, we're about four miles from the outlet of the Clearwater River, where it enters Clearwater Lake. The Azure River comes out of Azure Lake, flows about a hundred yards into the Clearwater river which comes out of Hobson Lake to the north.
