Wilderness Canoe Tripping
Canoes on the Beach Our last night on the Lake system was at Huckleberry Campground, I think the northernmost one on the east side of Clearwater Lake. We filled it up, taking the last available campsite. Though full that night, the campground wasn't overly noisy (though that doesn't mean it can't be). The two couples in the tent site next to us were from Calgary, Alberta, and were testing out the two cedar strip canoes they had built over the summer. Beautiful, shiny, new boats, as you can see in the picture. I own a strip cedar boat myself and use it quite a bit. It looks it, too! The two canoes in the foreground are rentals from Clearwater Lake Tours, the only operator in this area of the park. The red one is an Old Town Discovery model, I'm not sure which one, but probably the 17 foot version, though it could be the 16 footer. There's a link to Old Town's Web site in the links section of the group Web site under Manufacturers. The blue canoe behind it is a fiberglass model made in Canada. I'm not sure where the manufacturer is located, I'll see if I can track down a Web URL for them and post it. They're made under the "Frontiersman" brand name, and they're quite popular with folks in Canada. Lots of rental agencies use them. Not a bad hull design, but the construction is a bit heavy for my tastes, though rental yards like that because they'll hold up better (and they're not the ones who have to portage them!). I also think they're probably fairly modestly priced. The two canoes farthest away in the picture are mine and John's, which are described somewhat in the text included with the first and next to last pictures in the accompanying trip report.
