North River Attire Image

Mosquitoes, 16kb

A shot by John of Dennis and friends in our North River campsite above Fire Lake. This was a wide, flat swampy area and the mosquitoes were pretty thick. Not to tundra standards, but we hope to not experience them any worse than this. When Dennis puts on a headnet, they are getting pretty bad. You can see the netting around Dennis's head and lots of mosquitoes on his black pant legs.

We all used DEET to some extent, John and Dennis used more than Hank and Laurie did. Hank and Laurie usually resorted to the bug shirts with built in hood and netting over the face. We also had separate headnets we could use when the full shirt wasn't required or usable. We would put DEET on the backs of our hands so we could do things without wearing gloves. John and Dennis would splash DEET on thier faces, necks, hands, and ankles to prevent bites. They also had head nets for when they didn't want to use the smelly repellant.
