Mining Claim Post Image
These things, plus regular stakes with orange surveyor's tape, or just the orange tape tied to brush are all over the place in the North Lakes area. You'll also see them along the North River down to Fire Lake, around Fire Lake and on the North River for a ways below Fire Lake. This specific post is up at the north end of the lake, and we're looking northwest towards that mining drill hole activity we saw from that end of the lake. That actual exploratory hole is probably almost 2 miles (3 km) from the lake. The mineralization in this area has been known since the early 1960s, but assay grades and availability was not known at that time. Columbia Gold Mines, of Vancouver, BC, bought the rights to this area in 1995, and did drill tests during the summers of '96 and '97, with more planned for summer, 1998. According to the Yukon Geology Web page, their first assay results caused the biggest claim staking rush in Yukon's recent history.
