North/Black Rivers Junction Image
John took the picture of this view of the confluence of the North and Black Rivers. We had camped about a quarter mile above here (400 m) the night before, but this would have been a much nicer spot. That's Laurie checking for birds through her binoculars. John and Dennis fished here for a bit, with no luck, but they considered it just fish not biting at the time as we saw fish both shortly up and downstream of here.
The Black river comes in from the left of the photo (behind and from the
left of Laurie) and downstream on the Black is in back of the photographer.
The very inconspicuous channel of the North River that was our entry to the
Black comes in from the right of the photo. Upstream there are lots more
junctions of the North and Black Rivers.
Here's a (future) link to a scan of the area off the In the Geology pages the Tintina Fault and resulting Tintina Trench are introduced. This is where we first meet those geographical features. We follow them to our take out, which means we are now paddling along - sometimes probably directly over -- a geological fault for the next 125 miles (202 km) of our trip. We never saw it, of course, though it may have shown in some of the rock strata. I hadn't researched this trip enough beforehand to know it was there.
