Wilderness Canoe Tripping
Campsite at the Confluence with the Meister River
John took this shot along the beach at our campsite on the Liard River across from where the Meister River flows in. A pretty place, nice beach, and big enough that we could get away from the vegetation and the bugs. The tents and gear are to the left out of the picture. It probably extended a quarter mile (400 m) along the river bank and in places was 150 feet or more (45+ m) deep. That meant we had to walk a ways to set up the tarp, but that wasn't a problem. Wolf tracks along the beach were fresher than the last rain which was the day before. That big eroded cliff you see across the river was continually shedding rock and making noise. We didn't take the time, but it probably would have been pretty easy to hike up from the low side at either end of the cliff to get to a view at the top. There were also some old human shoeprints here. A motor boat came down the Meister while we were there but didn't stop. The first people we had seen since the Fire Lake mining camp. Probably someone with a cabin a short ways up that river going into town.
