Liard River From Airplane Image
This is a view upstream on the Liard River John took looking out the window of the airplane soon after taking off from Watson Lake. These loops are your first view of the river and they're about 2.5 miles (4 km) from the lake. We are about five miles (8 km) upstream of the Alaska Highway bridge we use as a take out. Our last Liard River campsite is on a low island hidden in one of these loops. Despite the fairly low relief in this area, you can see that there are some high riverbanks here and there. Low, wide swampy areas in places, too. The elevation of the river is just about 2,000 feet (610 m) here, and the plane is about 500 feet (150 m) in the air above it, and climbing. Our put-in lake is over 2,000 feet higher than the river is here, so we have some climbing to do in the 120 miles (190 km) we'll fly to get there.
