North River Falls View Image 1
I'm not sure if Laurie or John took this photo, probably John. A bit of a dreary day. The main river flow is left of a long skinny island that ends just before the falls. There is a narrow channel with not quite enough water to run when we were there. We drifted down what we could and lined and portaged down the rest to a small eddy just before the end of the island, and started portaging from there. The falls itself is about 15 feet (4.6 m) and gonzo white water kayakers would consider it runnable. There other small ledges a ways above it that probably bring the whole drop to about 20 feet (6 m). Also there was a log wedged in a narrow spot just below the pool at the bottom, out of sight in this shot. Tandem loaded open canoe paddlers (even if you have a spray skirt) will not want to mess with this at all. It is about a 12 mile (20 km) hike back up through thick vegetation and steep terrain to the mining camp to radio for help. It is not easy to see in this photo, but there is a river wide ledge right at the end of the island. Hank saw this from the air flying in. John and Dennis might have too. They saw a large drop of some kind. I did not see the actual falls because of the angle into the canyon from the plane, but figured we would need to check that ledge rapid, anyway. Dennis was pretty sure he saw the falls and they might have because they flew lower than Hank and Laurie, and might have been at a better angle for viewing when they went over this area.
