Black River Decked Canoe Image

Decked canoe (31kb)

A shot of John and Dennis on the river shortly below our campsite, while they had the deck on their boat. Up to now we've not used decks for wilderness trips. They do have advantages, but there are some disadvantages, too. They can keep rain out of the boat, your lower body warm in wet, cold, windy, weather, and keep occasional splash out of the boat. However, they can be dangerous in a capsize situation, they reduce your mobility in the boat, and make it hard to load and unload the boat, plus get things you need when you want them while on the water. Some also have a tendancy to come off when you need them most. Hank has refused to use them so far, mainly because they don't seem to him to do that much good. After running rapids without a cover, he's watched a covered canoe run it and bail or dump at least as much water out of the boat as he did. Most disadvantages can be overcome at least somewhat with proper spray cover design.
