Wilderness Canoe Tripping
Braids View, Image 1
John took this photo of the rest of us trying to figure out the best place to get over a log dam somewhere in the first mile or so of the Braids area. Fallen trees, or even small and large log jams, can slowly dam the water behind them, trapping sediment which is what we are walking on. Laurie and I are looking over about a three foot (1 m) drop caused entirely by logs. We stayed river left in the braids section between the Falls and the confluence with the Black River. I'm not sure that was the wisest choice. Let me know if you go and try another route. A dreary rainy day as you can tell from the headgear, although it cleared up some later. The mosquitoes were also very bad in this area. Generally we were able to stay away from them while on the water because the current was fast enough that they couldn't catch us. Here, we had to stop and scout so often that we had to contend with bugs for the whole four or five miles (6 to 8 km) of slow water before camp.
