Yukon Territory - North/Black/Liard River Canoe Trip, Bibliography

If the info needed to find or purchase any of the the publications listed below isn't included here, try the Contacts Page or some of the links pages for it.

History:
"Fur Trade and Exploration, Opening the Far Northwest 1821-1852" by Theodore J Karamanski, University of Oklahoma Press, 1983.
(Sort of dry reading unless you are into this type of historical research, and I haven't found a source other than above for this book.)

General Area Info:
MILEPOST®
MILEPOST is a guidebook, updated yearly, indispensible to those traveling to, or even just towards Alaska (even if you never make it to AK!) on the Cassiar Highway or Alaska Highway and approach roads. It has lots of info on the area, with what services are where along the roads you use to get almost anywhere in western Canada and Alaska. Info online at: http://www.themilepost.com/

Watson Lake Chamber of Commerce and tourist info packet.

Guidebooks:
The definitive guidebook for the Yukon is Ken Madsen's and Graham Wilson's Rivers of the Yukon, a Paddling Guide. Primrose Publishing, 1989, Whitehorse, YT. ISBN 0-88925-924-9. It has been replaced by an expanded and updated issue, but I don't yet have a copy. The North/Black/Liard route is not covered in the guidebook, but there is lots of other good general info for those wanting to paddle in the Yukon, western NWT, Northern BC, and east/southeast Alaska.

A much older Yukon guidebook is Richard and Rochelle Wright's Canoe Routes, Yukon Territory. 1977, 1980 Douglas & McIntyre, Ltd. Vancouver, BC. ISBN 0-88894-282-6. It has been out of print for quite some time now. Of course, it doesn't cover this canoe route either.

  • I haven't found much of anything else yet, except for a few Yukon Web servers listed on the Contacts Page.
