The Green River
(by Adam Taylor, age 7)
Friday, 16 April 1999
Yesterday, I flew to the Green River. It took 3 hours. Then it took us
a hour in a half. My dad sure is a good pilite. When we got there, we
put gas in the airplane. Then we drove to a hotel. We dident rent a car
because my grandma and Grandpa drove to the green river in a car. We
stade in a hotel called Super 8 Hotel. We sleped there ofer night.
Saturday, 17 April 1999
Then we got our hotel bags and went to the place war all our stuf was.
After all our stuf was by the van, we lodid it in a truk.
We rode in
the truk with all the lugij. We finoly got to the river then we lodid
the cunos. We got in the canoe after we got done loding the canoe.
Then
we hedid off. First we ternd to the left then it started going like
hills together but sidwase on the ground.
I pateld a little then I had
my first hike on the Green River. We hiked to the outlaw cabin and to
an Indian fort. The Indian fort was round and made out of red mud and
rocks. The outlaw cabin was made out of wood. The roof was torn off.
Inside the cabin was lots of objects on the window sill like rocks,
glass, nails, tin cans and wire. After the hike we got back into our
canoes and went farther down the river to our first camsite were we
spent the night. After we set up our big blue dome tent we skipped
lots of flat rocks into the Green River. Then we had a delicious
chicken dinner. When it got dark, Grandpa read us a true story about
a dog named Cookie while we sat by the hot fire. After the story, we
went to bed.
Sunday, 18 April 1999
Today is Sunday, so far I have seen a little green scorpion, two mule
deers, a snake that my Uncle caught, bug eating bats, lots and lots of
noisy birds, a huge ant hill with tons of hungry red ants, lots of bees
and one bumble bee. We also went on the longest
dessert hike ever.
It was very hot. I had to drink lots of water to stay alive.
My uncle
had to carry me through a cactus patch on the way to the top of the
canyon. After the hike we went to our next campsite and set up our
three tents. That night I had beef strogunoff for dinner. After dinner
Grandpa read us another story about the dog named Cookie. He's going to
read us a little bit of the story each night. Then we listened to the
birds chirp all night.
Monday, 19 April 1999
When I woke up, I woke up to the smell of french
toast. It was really
good. After breakfast I went hiking with my
grandpa and grandma, Hank
and lorie, my uncle and my Dad past the two story Indian dwelling to
some really steep rocks. My Dad wouldn't let me go as high as Hank and
my uncle because he said it was too dangerous. Then we hiked down the
hill back to the campsite and lodid the canoe.
When we got done loading
the canoes we went farther down the river.
I sat in front for a wile and sometimes I sat in the
back on my
uncles lap and sometimes I sat in my grandpas canoe.
When we got to the other campsite we unloded the
canoes and set up the tents. Then I helped my uncle make a house aout
of rock and mud. After I made the rock house I chased lizards with my
Dad. I almost caught one but it kept flipping around so I couldn't
catch the lizard, but I broke a little piece of its tail off.
Tuesday, 20 April 1999
Today is Tusday. After having some pancakes I went
on a really steep
hike. On the way up my uncle caught a snake. When he was going to
take a picture of me holding it, it turned around
and bit me. I don't think I will tell my mom.
When we got a little higher I saw these huge
rocks with arrow-heads that the Indians chipped. After a while we got
to the top. When we got to the top we walked a while then we saw a huge
ant colony. Then we walked a little farther and me and my Dad were
tired. So my Grandpa and his friends plus my uncle went farther while
me and my Dad took aim and threw rocks at the targets that we picked
and who ever got that target would get to pick another target. When we
got to the botem of the big hill we lodid the rest of ourstuff in the
long canoes. Then we went down the long river four miles to a shady
sandbar and ate lunch. That sand bar was little. I had a peanut butter
and jelly sandwhich, six oreo cookies, two apples,
and some cold water
to drink. Then we went farther down the river and found another
campsite call Jasper Canyon. When we got there we unlodid the canoes.
After we unlodid the canoes grandpa showed me where the Indian ruin
was. The Indian ruin is about 1,000 years old. After we all had a
big dinner I took my Dad to the Indian ruin.
We climbed where the
Indians climbed. My uncle took a pikcher of my Dad and me.
I found a
path that led to a Indian lookout high up on a cliff. Later, we found
a different trail that led to a place where me and my uncle threw rocks
at another rock. My uncle called for my Dad he said, "come here and
take a pickcher of the river." He came up. My uncle wanted my Dad to
throw rocks at another rock down in the river, so my Dad forgot to take
a pickcher of the river. That night we had a fire and grandpa read
more of the story about Cookie.
Wednesday, 21 April 1999
Today is Wednesday. When I woke up we ate breakfast and
lodid the canoes.
After we got done we paddled to a place called Shot Canyon to go on the
first hike of the day. When we got there grandma said there is a bath
tub and a waterfall.
We hiked for a little bit then we found the
waterfall which was the bathtub. The bath tub was supposed to be warm.
it was cold. When we got back I was so hungery that I ate 3 rice crispy
treats before lunch. Then we paddled to our next campsite called Powell
Canyon. When we got there I had a huge lunch.
After lunch I wanted to
make a dam at the side of the river. After I was done with the dam my
Dad wanted me to write in my journal in the tent.
It was a good thing
we did because it started to rain hard! It rained for two hours.
Tomorrow is the last day I'm going to be on the river.
I'm going to
miss camping on the river but I also miss my mom, Heather, and my dog,
Kessel and will be glad to
be back home.
The End
